Mullet, the Unassuming Sportfish
After several customer requests for "mullet flies", I had our tiers make up two different "bread crumb" flies. I never really thought of a mullet as a sport fish, but apparently in Australia and else where they are considered highly as a fun fish to catch, and fight better than trout.
The idea is to "chum" them with real bread crumbs, then while they are feeding cast a fly that looks like the bread.
Of the two we carry, one is deer hair, trimmed to look like a piece of bread, and the other a simple white egg fly to resemble a smaller piece of bread. The fly in this listing is the deer hair fly tied on sticky sharp Japanese wet fly hooks. I choose those because they are sharper than stainless hooks.
I'm looking forward to giving them a try on the Texas coast. Catching a bunch of one pound mullet on a 3wt would be a blast.
