From it's introduction, the Zonker quickly gained the reputation of being a big-fish fly. Don Byford, who developed the Zonker, put the newly introduced Mylar tubing to good use in constructing a very realistic bait fish imitation.
These pearl Zonkers are tied with lead wire inside the Mylar tubing, so they ride up side down like a bendback fly. With the hook bend hidden in the rabbit hair and riding with the hook point up, they're almost snag proof.
