The creation of Ally's Shrimp is one of the most significant developments in the history of shrimp flies, if for no other reason than that thousands of anglers worldwide have been introduced to shrimp flies by this pattern.

According to Alastair Gowans, he first conceived the Ally's Shrimp as an imitation of a particular prawn which was characterized by a long slim body. By imitating this type of prawn rather than the shorter more compact variety he produced one of the most effective flies for fast water conditions that has ever been devised.

Ally's Shrimp has gained a huge reputation since the tying first appeared in the August 1988 edition of Trout and Salmon Magazine.
