 Members of the order Odonata, Dragonflies and Damsel Flies are long lived insects taking up to two years in the water before they hatch into winged adults. This means that at any given time these nymphs are present in or around streams, lakes and ponds.
Their life cycle from egg to adult has four stages, but  fly fishers need only be concern with three. The crawling nymph, swimming nymph and fluttering adult.
